Sweet Potatoes: Baked vs. Mashed

When I was young, sweet potatoes were only made one way: peeled, sliced and baked. A little brown sugar, a lot of butter and in the oven they went. Out of all the amazing side dishes at the Thanksgiving table, sweet potatoes were the least popular. The adults would take a token slice, but when the meal was done, there were always plenty left.

Fast forward to today. I love sweet potatoes. They are versatile, filling, and actually good for you. They can be mixed with cinnamon and brown sugar for a sweet treat, or cubed and used in vegetarian chili. And for Thanksgiving, they can shine. When prepared correctly, this delicious orange vegetable pops and can easily steal the show from any colorless white potato or green casserole.

Although there are multiple ways to make sweet potatoes, we’ve pared it down to two recipes certain not to be overlooked or passed by on the Thanksgiving table. Depending on your guests, menu, and taste preferences, one may work better than the other for you. But both are simple to prepare and sure to please.

For a more formal Thanksgiving table or when entertaining a crowd, our Cranberry Sweet Potatoes are perfect. The sweet taste of cinnamon and sugar combine with the tangy flavors of orange juice and cranberries to make this flavorful dish one you’ll want to make year after year. And, these can easily be made in the slow cooker, freeing up valuable oven space.

If you’re looking for a new twist, or want individualized servings, we recommend serving Baked Sweet Potatoes with Sweet or Savory Butter. Served with different toppings, these baked potatoes will delight both those looking for a savory flavor or a sweet one. Our recipes for Cinnamon Butter or Salted Garlic Herb Butter are easy to prepare and can be made days ahead of time.

Whichever you choose, these festive recipes require little time to prepare and are sure to delight. Baked or mashed, oven or slow cooker, we’re pretty sure you can’t go wrong.
