The sweet story of Magnolia Bakery

Since opening their first storefront location in Manhattan’s West Village more than 25 years ago, Magnolia Bakery has grown into a global purveyor of classic American desserts, including cakes, cupcakes, cheesecakes, cookies, brownies, icebox desserts and, of course, the bakery’s famous banana pudding. Magnolia Bakery’s fame first grew beyond New York City when the bakery appeared in a 2001 episode of Sex and the City. Carrie and Miranda sat outside the shop discussing Carrie’s love life (what else?) while eating vanilla buttercream cupcakes and licking pink icing off of their fingers. That cupcake, now known as the Carrie Cupcake, is still a top seller. Today the bakery is perhaps best known for its decadent banana pudding, which comes in five varieties and is shipped to every corner of the world.

Much of the brand’s growth has occurred since 2007, when Bobbie Lloyd joined the Magnolia Bakery family as CEO and Chief Baking Officer. A lifelong cook and baker, Bobbie released her first cookbook, The Magnolia Bakery Handbook: A Complete Guide for the Home Baker, in October 2020 to bring professional baking tips and Magnolia Bakery’s beloved recipes to home bakers across the globe. Included in the book are recipes for cakes, cupcakes, cookies, brownies and bars, pies and crisps, muffins, scones, icebox desserts, banana pudding, buttercream and icings, crumbs and crusts, and fillings and sauces. The handbook also teaches you how to decorate your desserts so they look as wonderful as they taste.
