I’m always looking for an affordable and convenient, not to mention quick, appetizer idea for parties and get-togethers. Whether it’s a family reunion, dinner party or just a few friends gathering to watch the game on Sunday, I like to have a great app ready in minutes. I don’t want to spend a fortune on gourmet ingredients, but I don’t want to heat up frozen fish sticks either. There should be an appetizer that falls in between these two extremes, right? A perfect middle ground that pleases everyone – and my wallet.
I’ve been scouring Pinterest for this type of appetizer for years, but I never found anything as quick and easy as I wanted. I tried a few recipes, but always ended up stuck in the kitchen during kickoff. But not anymore. I finally have a solution for the perfect 10-minute app.
These baked wonton cups are perfect for last-minute or casual entertaining because they’re speedy and simple. There are no complicated techniques involved – all you need is a muffin tin and wonton wrappers, which can be found in most grocery stores. You can make anywhere from 6-24 of these at a time, depending on how many muffin tins you have and whether you are baking them in a toaster oven or regular oven. Simply tuck a wonton wrapper into each muffin tin so it creates a little bowl or cup shape and bake for about 8 minutes, until the edges have browned and the wonton is crisp.
When the wonton wrappers have cooled and you’ve removed them from the muffin tins, you can pack them with any filling you want. They are as appropriate for savory dishes as they are for sweet, and they accommodate both hot and cold fillings.
If you want to make the wontons fancy (don’t worry, even this part is painless), you can brush the wrappers with egg wash and sprinkle them with Parmesan cheese and Italian seasoning before baking. These are great for savory appetizers. You can even get creative and add your own favorite blend of seasonings, herbs and spices to customize the app cups.
If you’re thinking of doing something sweet, brush the wrappers with egg wash and sprinkle them with cinnamon and sugar or cocoa powder and sugar. Then, fill them with pudding, mousse, ice cream, berries or your favorite dessert.
My favorite way to serve wonton cups is to fill warm cups with scrambled eggs. Add cooked breakfast sausage, peppers, onions, mushrooms and herbs for a savory brunch twist. Also good is a cool savory wonton cup with your favorite chicken salad. Try a classic 7-layer dip built into each cup for individual servings. It’s like the chip is already included!
